About

BIID Members plus their guests are invited to enjoy a day out at the 2019 West Dean Arts and Crafts Festival at West Dean College near Chichester in West Sussex.

West Dean College was established at West Dean House in 1971 by artist and poet Edward James, a major patron of the Surrealist movement. James feared that certain arts, and particularly the techniques of craftsmen, would be lost after the Second World War, as a solution James converted his family home into an educational community where the techniques of craftsmanship could be preserved and taught, restoration of old works could be carried out, and the creation of new art works could flourish.

The College is now home to a thriving community of artists and craftspeople and welcomes guests to enjoy their award-winning Grade II* listed gardens including a restored walled kitchen garden with 13 Victorian glasshouses, and 300 ft Edwardian pergola, designed by architect Harold Peto.

WHAT TO EXPECT

With the house only opened once a year (during the festival), guests will be able to enjoy a rare chance to take a self-guided tour of the historic West Dean House interiors, featuring works from the famed Edward James Collection.

The festival also promises an outstanding showcase of arts and craft activities such as creative workshops, craft stalls and talks and demonstrations on a variety of art-based subjects.

Please arrive at West Dean Garden Reception at 11.30am for registration with a BIID Staff Member. The rest of the day is yours to explore the house, garden and festival attractions.
