About

BIID members, plus a guest, are invited to tour Two Temple Place, one of London’s architectural gems. An extraordinary late Victorian mansion built by William Waldorf Astor on the Embankment. The tour will be led by a knowledgeable volunteer to reveal the fascinating history behind Two Temple Place and the stunning ornamentation of this interesting and rarely viewed by the public property.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The building was originally designed for use as Astor’s estate office by one of the foremost neo-Gothic architects of the late nineteenth-century, John Loughborough Pearson. Astor had emigrated to England in 1891 as, arguably, the richest man in the world and no expense was spared when work began on Two Temple Place in 1892. In addition to the extraordinary, opulent interior, when it was finished in 1895, Two Temple Place contained the largest strong room in Europe as well as two other enormous fortified safes.

Astor, by all accounts, was a shy and austere man with a secretive nature and prickly personality; reflected in the building’s imposing façade, formidable gargoyles and strong room. Whilst the opulent interior with wood panelling and intricate carving is a vivid reflection of Astor’s deepest passions and interests: history, literature and the arts.

WHAT YOU WILL LEAVE WITH

An insight into the the richest man in the world’s’ London estate office, a fabulous example of the work of neo-Gothic architect John Loughborough Pearson whose most notable structure is Truro Cathedral, the first new Anglican cathedral built since the Middle Ages (other than Wren’s rebuilding of St Paul’s).
