Project 1 - 1830’s Terrace House
Karen White married an Englishman in 1970 and London has been home other than 7 years in Hong Kong where she founded Source Interiors. A designer with wide international experience, creating interesting spaces to suit private and corporate clients. House & Garden Magazine listed her among the UK’s leading designers.
She prides herself on not having a particular ‘look’. She responds to the clients’ wishes and their style, and to the architecture and budget. Her endeavour is to create rooms that work and that people are happy to be in.
Karen has extensive history of designing corporate headquarters for companies with particular personalities to express, such as the refurbishment of Coca Cola’s former offices in Wrights Lane and the design and furnishing of the Beatles’ headquarters, Apple Corps Ltd, as well as renovating older homes, both in London and the country. Employing a broad range of skills, she is known for:
Innovative kitchen design, beautiful bathrooms and excellent storage solutions for people with ‘things’.
Designing unique furniture including dining tables, a corner cupboard, lamps and a large contemporary footstool.
She calls on fine artists and many skilled craftsmen such as blacksmiths and leather specialists to achieve unique curtain design and other window treatments. See photos of painted furniture, painted ceiling decoration and other trompe l'oeil.
She works with clients’ treasured possessions: furniture, art collections, books, antiques. But she is equally happy to start afresh, supplying everything.
Her focus on light: balancing natural and artificial light for both ambient and task lighting is a key to the success of a room.
Creative use of traditional and contemporary furniture, often combining them.
Careful attention given to heating, ventilation, audio-visual and soundproofing.
Karen acquired wide-ranging knowledge of fabrics, textiles and soft furnishings in Hong Kong where she founded Source Interiors and was the exclusive agent for Osborne & Little, Boussac, Lelievre, Colefax & Fowler and other fine textile producers. She also worked extensively in the Mandarin Hotel public areas as well as designing the standard room renovation during her time there.
Karen is available by telephone or by appointment at her London office. Projects small and large are undertaken. On-site consultations can be arranged at hourly or day rates.
