Matteo Bianchi Matteo Bianchi Studio

Islington basement conversion

The brief from our client, a professional woman with children was to create a flexible space, fun for kids and adults alike, with a scheme to set the scene for evening entertaining. The client expressed a love for subtle hues of romantic colours. The existing space was composed of three very dark rooms which housed an old kitchen and storage for outdoor toys.

Opening out the internal rooms and the external back wall has ensured the space now glows with southern facing light. Matteo Bianchi designed a bistro-style bespoke kitchen opening out onto the vibrant garden, with a cosy living area behind the breakfast bar. The dining corner is framed by a delicate backlit sheer. The space has an indoor/outdoor feel thanks to a continual tile throughout.

The Studio created a very clever lighting scheme for all moods, with many faces - recessed lights that peak from the central, venetian plaster covered pillar, glowing edges beneath the reclaimed work top and recessed floor up lights.

The soft yet bold colours in the scheme are very harmonious and on top sit iconic furniture from Aram and Fritz Hansen.  Very large tiles are seamless and aid in the open, roomy feeling of the space.
