James originally trained and worked as an Interior Designer. Having always had a keen interest in photography, he began to take it up more seriously, initially for the purpose of shooting his own design projects. Gradually he began to receive commissions from fellow Designers and Architects to a point where photography became his main career. While most of his work is now based around architectural and interior subject matter, he also takes in landscape, travel and still life.

Clients include Interior Designers, René Dekker, Juliette Byrne, Guy Goodfellow, and Barclay Interiors; Architects, Squire & Partners, Studio Indigo, and MAP Projects; Hotel & Leisure Groups, Hilton Worldwide and London Clubs; and Brands including Fromental, Susi Bellamy, John Cullen Lighting, and Forwood Design. James' work has appeared in numerous magazines including: Conde Nast Traveller, World of Interiors, House & Garden, Sunday Times, Saturday and Sunday Telegraph, Homes & Gardens, The English Home, Period Living, and Living etc, as well as various books such as the "Cool Hotels" series, "Kitchenalia" by Vinny Lee, "Restaurant Design" by Bethan Ryder, and "Outside" by Terrence Conran & Diarmuid Gavin.
