As the new University building is open to the public as well as students, it was important to give Beacon House its own individual feel while at the same time ensuring it could be identified as a University space. The design strategy endeavoured to create a distinct visual identity, linking together the three main functions of the space, and working within the agreed brand colour palette and recommendations of the University’s General Project Requirements.

The layout needed to be open and inviting, giving views in / out to create a secure environment for 24-hour use as well as providing multiple changeable work settings; accommodating group learning, seminars, presentations, individual work spaces, and assisted learning support. We utilised a wide range of furniture options and movable acoustic and writeable screens enabled these layouts.

Beacon House has achieved a Royal Institution for Chartered Surveyors SKA rating of bronze, mainly by upgrading insulation, introducing double glazed windows, fitting energy efficient boilers and using LED lighting.
