BIID Sustainability Showcase Programme 2022
The Showcase is back! Join us for a full day virtual conference of exciting talks from sustainability experts in the interior design sector on Wednesday the 30th March.
Sustainability is no longer a nice to have, it has become imperative practice within the built environment to ensure the sector is working towards a green future. Navigating the complexities of change to eco-efficiency from historical practice can be difficult, what can designers do to lead the change and be the difference?
Join us for a full day talks programme from industry experts, designers and accredited CPD Providers to hear case studies, learn about new innovations and be inspired to embark on your own journey into sustainability.
Registered Interior Designers – attendance to this event is worth double CPD hours, with 10 structured hours available, you can complete your full annual CPD requirement in just one day.
This event has been designed for attendees to enjoy as a full-day programme, but drop-ins for individual sessions are welcomed
PROGRAMME
9.25 Registration
9.30 Welcome from BIID President Lindsey Rendall
9.35 Keynote: Interior Design Declares, Speaker: Cat Hoad
Interior Design Declares is part of Built Environment Declares, a global petition movement uniting all strands of construction and the built environment. It is both a public declaration of our planet’s environmental crises and a commitment to take positive action in response to climate breakdown and biodiversity collapse. Join BIID Member and Interior Design Declares advocate, Cat Hoad, as she explains how a united declaration will support more effective lobbying of policy makers and governments to show leadership and commit resources and how interior designers can support the movement.
10.15 CPD1: Graphenstone Paints, The Bright Future of Sustainable Paints, Speaker: Patrick Folkes
The paints industry is witnessing substantial evolution after decades of inertia. At last, new brands offer natural sustainability with high performance, using the latest advances in technology. With the surging focus on Air Quality (in and outdoors) and Biophilic design, paints are under the spotlight like never before. This CPD explains current challenges, new developments and how to identify truly ecological brands from the all the greenwash. Understanding why your choice of paints is about so much more than just colour.
Learning outcomes: Global ecological impact of paints industry; History of petro-chemical based, plastic & VOC heavy offerings; New 21st century technical advances (carbon Graphene) in mineral paints; Development of advanced new products that offer health & sustainability benefits, with no performance compromise; How to avoid the growing greenwash.
11.15 Break
11.30 Designer Case Studies
Hear from designers about how they have incorporated sustainability principles into their practices and projects.
Angela Bardino, Jacobs, Project: Tech Office
BIID Member Angela Bardino will walk us through the design stages of creating a cutting-edge Tech Office highlighting the benefits of designing flexibility to meet long term sustainability goals.
Liz Bell, Absolute Project Management London Ltd, Project: Philip and Andrew, Buckinghamshire
BIID Member Liz Bell will talk through a recent renovation and reconfiguration of an existing home in Buckinghamshire. It includes several renewable technologies which were carefully chosen to work with the client’s needs, budget and the existing house.
Chloe Bullock, Materialise Interiors & Sadie MillerMags, University of Wolverhampton, Project: Specifying Sustainably
The current state of the interiors industry has come into sharp focus over the last year, with many usual practices now being reviewed as less than ideal. However, change is afoot with exciting Next Gen developments currently happening in our sector. Join BIID Member Chloe Bullock and BIID Student member Sadie MillerMags as they discuss these innovations and make a case for ‘best design’ not using any new materials at all, with second best being designing out waste. How? By replacing specifications that traditionally use virgin materials and harmful chemical processes, we have the potential for using specifications that are problem solving, eco-efficient and kinder for all.
12.30 CPD 2: Swatchbox, Sampling Smarter: A guide to working sustainably with sample, Speaker: Antony Fuller
Waste management in the UK is evolving, but landfill, decomposition rates and leachate, toxins and Green House Gases are still major issues facing the construction industry. In this CPD you will learn about these factors and what designers can do to lessen the impact of their own practice on the environment via several key initiatives that are making the sample ordering and management process a lot easier These include: Zero Avoidable Waste in Construction initiative (ZAW), ‘Return A Sample’ programs and exploring new technologies such as sample aggregation platforms and sample recycling services.
Learning outcomes: Understand the scope of sample waste being generated by the construction industry and design firms; How to correctly recycle samples; How to motivate your teams to use more sustainable approaches to sample ordering; Examples of how other firms are reusing samples to other functions; Services that can help your practice reduce waste.
13.15 Lunch
14.00 Expert Talk: Heating and Energy Improvements for Retrofit Projects, Speaker: Rob Bohm CLPM Ltd
With conflicting information, new regulations and fast-moving technology, designers are increasingly being called upon to be ‘energy gurus’ for their client’s heating concerns. Cut through the noise with this talk covering heating solutions, including renewable technologies, and energy reduction measures for retrofit projects in period properties, with an emphasis on future proofing. This also important for extensions and new build projects as sustainability measures are often left to chance.
15.00 CPD 3: Havwoods, Regenerative Architecture, Speaker: Phil Jones
Regenerative Design is a big step up from just Sustainable Design. It optimises the huge benefits of restorative principals. It optimises good, not just focussing on what is ‘less bad’. Via this CPD we are unpacking a new concept that could have a hugely positive impact in the built environment as well as our current existential crisis of the planet.
Learning objectives: How 'sustainable architecture' is evolving; What is meant by 'regenerative design'; The components of 'regenerative architecture'; The future of sustainable architecture which can be applied to future projects; Different aspects of biomimicry in the context of architecture
