BIID Tour of Stanley Picker House

BIID Registered Interior Designer and Associate members are invited on an exclusive tour of Stanley Picker House, Garden and Collection

Stanley Picker was a patron of the arts who formed a very individual collection of twentieth-century sculptures and paintings. He was born in New York in 1913 and died in England in 1982.

Stanley’s house off Kingston Hill, which is owned and managed by the Stanley Picker Trust (Registered Charity no: 271185) was designed by Kenneth Wood and built in 1968. The specification for the design was that it was to be built to house and display his art collection and at the same time to be a home where he could live and enjoy entertaining. The garden gallery was added in 1976 to accommodate his expanding collection.

In 1976 Stanley set up the Charitable Trust to encourage young artists at what was then Kingston College of Art. In accordance with Stanley’s wishes and as far as is possible within the constraints  of their resources and responsibilities for the maintenance of the house and collection, the Trust continues to encourage and support students and focus their grant making on vocational training in Fine Arts and Performing Arts which were Stanley’s particular areas of interest, providing grants to many conservatoires and other establishments specialising in these fields of education throughout London and other parts of the UK to enable them to give scholarships and bursaries to students who would otherwise be unable to afford their training.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The tour lasts a maximum of two hours. Visitors will be given an introduction on the history of Stanley Picker, the collection and the Trust he established. An experienced lecturer, who has researched Stanley Picker, his house and his collection, will guide you around the house and collection to study the paintings, architecture and furnishings, with the tour then concluding with a walk around the beautiful gardens.

Tickets are for BIID members only, should you not be a BIID Registered Interior Designer or Associate member your booking will be cancelled and refunded, please note this to avoid disappointment. 

About the venue

The venues address will be released to registered ticket holders on purchase.

House rules:

• No more than 6 cars may be parked on the forecourt at any one time, so please confirm at the time of booking if you will be arriving by car as these spaces are available on a first come first served basis only.
• Please park all cars in the forecourt at the property and not anywhere on the private road outside the house as this restricts the movements of neighbours. Due to these restrictions, please arrive no more than 15 minutes before your tour is due to start.
• Please wear flat-soft soled shoes and protective shoe covers must be worn and are provided to protect the wooden flooring and original carpeting.
• There is strictly no photography allowed anywhere at the property so we would ask visitors not to bring cameras and keep mobile telephones with cameras in their pockets/bags at all times.

Access:

The house, which was designed for its location on the side of a hill, is split level and there is no lift. The garden, the main areas of the house and the gallery can be accessed only by a series of steep stairs. For visitors with limited mobility it is therefore regrettable that no access can be given beyond the entrance level of the house. Children under 15 cannot be admitted to the house, gallery or garden.

3. A replacement delegate nominated and confirmed by you is permitted, but must be confirmed in writing to info@BIID.org.uk prior to the event.
4. If you wish to cancel your booking to a free event please do so via Eventbrite as soon as possible so that your ticket can be reallocated.
5. The BIID reserves the right to make changes to the programme.
6. The BIID reserves the right to cancel the event if unavoidable circumstances arise.
7. This event will be photographed and videoed. Attendance constitutes consent for these images/videos to be used, by the BIID and its partners, for promotional purposes.
8. In compliance with the Data Protection Act, we must point out that the information on this form will be kept on a database.
9. Your name may be shared with the venue.
10. These terms and conditions shall be governed by and construed under the laws of England and Wales and you submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Courts of England and Wales.
