Intellectual Property for Interior Designers

Published on

Event published: 03/09/2020

What is intellectual property? What are the different types of intellectual property? And how do you own, protect and exploit it?

Join the BIID in discussion with Mark Elmslie, Partner of law firm Hewitsons LLP,  and BIID Director Claire Tull as they discuss how to protect your intellectual property as an interior designer, on site, in print and on social media.

They will be covering questions such as:

  • What is intellectual property – a brief overview
  • The types of IP relevant to your business: copyright, designs and trade marks.
  • How do you register, protect and exploit your IP?
  • Intellectual property: issues for the  self employed
  • Intellectual property: issues for employers and employees
  • Key contractual IP clauses applying in  contracts

Common questions from interior designers that will be addressed:

  • If someone has used your images/ CGI’s for their own marketing (website, print magazine, social media) and do not credit you as the designer, what can you do about it?
  • When a design gets made, built, or installed and a photograph is taken – copyright in the photograph is (usually) the IP of the photographer, what happens to the designer’s IP? Do they still have any?
  • And more!
