Huntsmore project

Listed Kensington Townhouse, W8

This project involved the complete renovation and restoration of this hallway and staircase, as well as the overhaul of a shower room and WC. The property was a townhouse in Kensington and the hallway area had not been fully renovated in approximately 40 years. The staircase was in bad condition, with many spindles damaged or missing, and the bannister providing very weak support.

Huntsmore undertook all designs for hallway area. The treads and risers were all stripped back to the bare wood, and the decision was take to replace all spindles with the exact style as existing. This was achieved by taking one spindle in good condition to a joinery workshop where they were able to use this as the template and create the amount needed for the project. The original mahogany handrail was retained, and this was sanded back, stained and treated to bring it back to its former glory.

The stairs were painted in Little Greene's 'Slaked Lime', and a new herringbone patterned stair-runner installed from the entrance hallway through to the floor. Encaustic cement tiles were installed in the entrance hallway. These have a traditional pattern in keeping with the building's heritage, but have a vibrant and contemporary colour pallette of greens, oranges and blues to lift the space and complIment the stair-runner and curtains.

The downstairs WC was also renovated, with the encaustic cement tiles continuing through to this room to give the feeling of more space. Traditional bathroom fittings were installed, with contemporary prints selected for the walls.

Despite the involved restoration works to the staircase, this was a light renovation project and took 10 weeks.
