Chippendale 300
Primary tabs
Event description
Chippendale 300 is a nationwide celebration, taking place in 2018 to mark the tercentenary of Thomas Chippendale’s birth in June 1718.
Thomas Chippendale, Britain’s great 18th century designer, furniture maker and entrepreneur, will be celebrated this year through exhibitions, masterclasses, tours, rarely seen works, and a major exhibition. Inspired by the life, work and legacy of the influential furniture maker, this year will focus on his finest work to convey a deeper appreciation of his place in design history.
Historic houses, museums, charities and craftsmen’s organisations that own, look after, study and work with furniture and interiors designed and produced by Chippendale as well as his birthplace, Otley in Yorkshire, have come together to present a programme that reveals the richness of the collections and interiors designed by Chippendale and still on public show in Britain. These include Burton Constable Hall, Dumfries House, Firle Place, Furniture History Society, Harewood House Trust, Leeds City Museum, Master Carvers Association, Newby Hall, Paxton House, Temple Newsam, Weston Park and a number of National Trust properties that hold Chippendale work including Nostell’s significant collection.
