Featuring Engineered Oak Herringbone Tannery Brown, from V4 Wood Flooring’s Zigzag collection, this incredible case study showcases what was once an underground bunker, now transformed to a residential property in Penshurst, Kent.

After a chance finding of some derelict land and buildings, that had sat untouched for years in the rural village of Penshurst in Kent, homeowners Amy and Marcos decided to take on the project of converting this space into their new family home. After several years of planning permission applications and a plethora of design changes, construction began across the three main elements of this build – the original reservoir, the new structure, and the Victorian forge workshop.

Throughout this self-build, Amy was the on-site project manager, which included planning the interior design of the home, including the large open plan family kitchen space that featured V4’s Tannery Brown Herringbone floors. Amy was keen to emulate designs she had seen featuring shaker style kitchens and herringbone floors, and after extensive research ordered samples of V4 Wood Flooring’s Herringbone. Whilst Amy wanted the floor to be in keeping with the rustic authentic design, the flooring had to also be practical for a family kitchen come dining room area. Tannery Brown is a distressed, stained and UV Oiled Oak, meaning that it is not only a hardwearing option, but the rustic elements will also be compliant with the design aim, to blend contemporary elements with traditional structures.

“We absolutely love the floors, they have more than lived up to expectation. They sit beautifully in this space complementing the fusion of industrial, rustic, and modern design elements perfectly. As expected, this room really has become the most used space in our home. We are always in here, so the floors are worked extremely hard, but they are so forgiving and easy to clean.” – Amy, Homeowner.
