CONTEMPORARY OPEN-PLAN LIVING AREA WITH ICONIC 50s DESIGN AND MODERN FLAIR

Location: Balsall Common, UK

Designing a living space that is both stylish and comfortable can be challenging, especially when blending different design styles. This contemporary open-plan living area uniquely combines the charm of 1950s iconic furniture with sleek modern elements, creating an inviting atmosphere. Let’s explore the details of this design project.

The Iconic Eames Chair: The Heart of the Space

The star of this living area is the classic Eames lounge chair and Ottoman in luxurious black leather with walnut wood accents. Designed in the 1950s by Charles and Ray Eames, this chair is known for its comfort and timeless style. Placed in the centre of the room, it is a comfortable, relaxing spot and a beautiful statement piece. Its elegant curves and quality materials create a nostalgic yet modern feel, anchoring the room and setting the tone for the entire space.

Warm Wood and Grey Tones: A Perfect Contrast

A custom veneered wood cladding with rich wood tones warms the room, contrasting beautifully with the light grey cabinetry surrounding it. The cabinets, featuring handless doors, provide a smooth and modern look.

This combination of colours and textures is stylish and practical, creating a visual contrast that keeps the design attractive without overwhelming the space.

A Textured Statement Panel by the Window

A statement panel next to the large window adds texture and depth to the room. This textured panel complements the natural light from the window, adding a bit of drama and elegance. It also serves as a design focal point, breaking up the smooth surfaces in the room and giving the entire area a more layered, three-dimensional feel

Soft LED Lighting for a Warm Glow

LED lighting behind the shelves adds a soft, inviting glow to highlight the decorative items on display. This lighting brightens the space and enhances the carefully chosen accessories on each shelf, giving them a special spotlight and making the entire wall feel dynamic and interesting, especially in the evening.

Large Wall Art and Subtle Metallic Finishes

A large contemporary wall art adds a splash of neutral colours and gives the room personality. Dark brass and black metal finishes and wall art frames throughout the room add a subtle hint of elegance, bringing in an industrial style that balances the 50s influences.

A Perfect Harmony of Past and Present

This open-plan living area perfectly exemplifies how mixing styles can create a harmonious and stylish space. The iconic Eames chair, combined with modern cabinetry, warm wood tones, and thoughtful lighting, makes this room feel timeless yet fresh. This blend of old and new makes the space unique and memorable—it’s modern, functional, and full of character. Whether relaxing with a book, entertaining guests, or enjoying a quiet evening, this living area has everything you need for style and comfort
