Chelsea Penthouse, Cranmer Court - A Soft Art Deco Revival
Perched atop Cranmer Court in Chelsea, this elegant pied-à-terre blends soft Art Deco inspiration with timeless design. Entrusted to us from concept to completion by an international client family, every inch of this three-bedroom, two-bathroom penthouse now bears our studio’s creative imprint.
Working within the eaves of this characterful London block presented architectural challenges that demanded inventive problem solving. We employed the use of the simple curve flowing into a straight line which we repeated throughout the property. Apart from it being a beautiful Art Deco form, and therefore appropriate, we were also able to use it for functional purpose - obscuring unsightly pipework and structural features, but it also to help facilitate a sense of spaciousness.
Our bespoke cabinetry, crafted by expert makers, blends flawless craftsmanship with practical design, tailored to our clients’ lifestyle requirements. We have also used cabinetry to cover over the architectural mishaps that the property offered up. The best example of this is the bathroom cabinetry in the Principal bathroom. Designed around the window, it covers the most hideous but most necessary array of pipework. It also provides essential storage facilities in otherwise extremely awkward spaces. You wouldn't know that by looking at or using the cabinetry though. Our cabinet makers deserve great kudos for their work in manifesting our designs here. There is always a leap of faith required with this level of complexity.
Art remains integral to this home’s spirit. The family’s passion for fine art allowed us to curate works by Artists Appreciation Initiative members — from Jocelyn Horsfall’s evocative cyanotype in the hall to Kasia Clarke’s and Emz Finche’s vibrant canvases animating the principal rooms.
In this project, every challenge became an invitation to use design to find a way of elevating. Where our client had an apartment made up of awkward spaces, they now have a spacious, elegant and light filled home from home — proving that exceptional design always finds a way.
