Black Pear Bespoke Furniture project

Contemporary Oak Furniture for a Collector

This project involved the design and manufacture of a bespoke entrance hall cabinet for a contemporary home, conceived to function both as a practical storage solution and as a defining focal point within the interior. The brief called for a piece that combined clean contemporary detailing with the warmth and character of natural timber, while also referencing the design language of a bespoke media unit previously created for the client.

Working collaboratively throughout the design process, the final cabinet was carefully developed to sit seamlessly within the architecture of the space, balancing restrained modern lines with rich material texture and craftsmanship. Rather than functioning purely as storage, the piece was designed to contribute architecturally to the room, creating a strong visual presence within the entrance hall.

Central to the design was the use of burr oak veneer, selected for its distinctive figuring and natural complexity. Formed from burl growth within the tree, burr oak is characterised by intricate swirling grain patterns that ensure each piece is entirely unique. For this commission, the veneer was carefully book-matched across the cabinet doors to create a mirrored composition, giving the piece a sense of balance and refinement while emphasising the expressive qualities of the timber.

The resulting cabinet combines contemporary simplicity with exceptional material character, reflecting the studio’s focus on bespoke craftsmanship, carefully considered detailing, and timeless design.
