DURHAM UNIVERSITY COLLEGE UPGRADES HEATING SYSTEM

Stelrad radiators find their way into the living areas and lives of a wide range of people and students feature heavily amongst those with a reason to be grateful for warmth and cosiness they offer. Among the latest group of students to welcome the arrival of new Stelrad radiators are those at one of the colleges that form Durham University, in the north east of England.

Durham University is ranked 89^th in the QS World University Rankings 2025 and 27^th in Europe – its ranked fifth in the UK in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025. It offers more than 330 undergraduate and postgraduate courses through seventeen different colleges that form the University. 

One of the colleges is Collingwood College, located on the hill above the city. It was founded in 1972 and has 555 students out of the total of 1,790 living in the college.  The university’s Energy and Sustainability Team deliver Greenspace, which promotes all of the University’s Environmental policies, plans and procedures, one of which is a move towards decarbonisation of the university at every level.

Collingwood College has a programme of gradually upgrading its heating system over time as budgets allow and has recently replaced a number of its elderly radiators with more modern models that will more effectively share heat around the student accommodation and the public areas of the college. This has seen 51 of the radiators across the buildings replaced with modern Stelrad Planar flat fronted – 39 of which have been K3 radiators – providing three steel panels and three sets of fins to increase the heat generated from each radiator – designed to work especially well with renewable heating systems – such as air source or ground source heat pumps. Part of the plans for the college are that these will be installed in the future.

“We’re delighted that our radiators are contributing towards making life comfortable for students at Durham Uni,” says Stelrad’s Specification Manager for the north, Lewis Aird. “We’re seeing our radiators selected for a wide range of educational type buildings and facilities, especially the K3 type radiators for buildings where heat pumps have or are being installed to provide renewable heating. We’re seeing this happening up and down the country as new student accommodation is built and existing student accommodation is refurbished.”
