Event description
Gray M.C.A Gallery presents an exhibition of colourful dynamic modernist textiles in Bath and Cromwell Place, London.
In a blaze of fresh colour following the national lockdown, Gray M.C.A presents From Bauhaus To Our House: Mid 20th Century Female Designers, celebrating the vision of the pioneers of mid 20th century design. Lucienne Day, Marian Mahler, Mary Warren, Jacqueline Groag, Paule Vézelay, Jane Daniels, Althea McNish, Barbara Brown and Nicola Wood were trail blazers of British design. This inspirational group of women artists brought modern and contemporary art into the home through their innovative textile designs.
“From Bauhaus To Our House celebrates the new ideas and perspectives that were to revolutionise mid 20th century Modern British design. Influences from Vienna’s Wiener Werkstätte, Gropius’s Bauhaus, European Modernism and emerging American Abstract Expressionism changed the face of British design. British designed textiles became a global phenomenon and a key economic driver winning new markets worldwide. They truly democratised Modern Art by making it literally a part of the furniture.” Gray M.C.A Gallery Director, Ashley Gray comments.
From Bauhaus To Our House is an expertly curated exhibit that pays tribute to Hans and Elsbeth Juda and ‘The Ambassador Magazine’ who brought British designed textiles to a worldwide market and the enlightened Heal Fabrics director Tom Worthington who selected the best of modern design direct from art schools.
This exhibition of important modern textiles presented as ‘Fine Art’ in their own right, celebrates the genius and influence of an extraordinary group of women artists whose talent and vision is as vibrant and relevant today as it ever was. A group of artists that prove what is Modern has never been more Contemporary. Pieces will be available to purchase from the exhibition with prices ranging from £400 to £2,500.
