Interiors magazines are full of beautifully styled interiors oozing with ambience, but what are the skills that an interior designer will require, in order to take a real-life home and turn it into a beautifully styled interior? Join interiors expert Judith Wilson and interiors photographer Rachael Smith in this workshop, illuminating the trade secrets and practicalities of styling for shoots, with scrutiny of successful projects and a host of insider tips. Designers then have the chance to put theory into practise as they are set with styling ‘real rooms’ with guidance from Judith and Rachael.

WHAT TO EXPECT

9.45am Arrive for registration and welcome tea, coffee and assorted pastries

10am What makes the perfect image?  Looking at magazine tear sheets, discussing what works/what doesn’t, examining and dissecting different interior styles

10.30am Atmospheric Kitchens, Dining Rooms, Sitting Rooms – looking at successful examples; good working props from tableware to toasters; how to fix common problem areas; bringing these working rooms to life!

11am BREAK

11.15am Perfect flower and plant options/flower arrangements; A-Z of accessories & props; selecting art and antiques to inject individuality on shoots

12pm Tranquil Bedrooms & Bathrooms – looking at successful examples; spotlight on bedding options; how to fix common problem areas; the crucial tipping point between enticing ambience and a tailored look

12.30pm Problem areas i.e. bookshelves & troubleshooting for attendees

1pm LUNCH (a light sandwich lunch will be provided)

2pm Behind the camera – a photographer’s top tips, from fees to angles

2.30pm Practical Styling for Bedrooms & Bathrooms *

3.15pm BREAK

3.30pm Practical Styling for Kitchens, Dining Rooms & Sitting Rooms *

4.15pm Attendees create their own Instagram shots and post!

4.30pm Reviewing photographer’s shots as a group

4.45pm Q & A

5.00pm End of workshop

*  For the practical sessions, assorted props (from cushions to china) will be supplied, along with vases and flowers, and fruit, for styling.

WHAT TO BRING

Before the session: attendees are encouraged to send in images of ‘problem’ areas or rooms in advance for group discussion (please email hayley.mclennan@BIID.org.uk with images).

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Judith Wilson is a London-based interiors journalist, author and lecturer.  Her work has appeared in numerous national magazines including House & Garden, Homes & Gardens, The English Home, Living etc and Country Homes & Interiors.  She is the author of 14 books on interior design: her latest is Think Home (Ryland Peters & Small).  Her books have been published widely in the Europe and the US..

Rachael Smith has been working professionally for 17 years, specialising in interiors photography. Her work has enabled her to travel around the world, with editorial, publishing and advertising commissions throughout Europe, America and as far as China and New Zealand. Rachael regularly works for The World of Interiors, Homes & Gardens, broadsheet supplements, and her work has been published in several books. She tries to not use wide angle lenses, so that she can create an intimacy and feeling of the space in her work.
