Director of Ridley Building Mark Ridley has been in the building industry self-employed since the age of 21. Carrying on the family tradition, he heads up the firm which operate on projects ranging from minor works to large scale extensions and new builds.

This job involved the renovation of Mark’s own home. The property was purchased in 2018 with a brief that covered extending the kitchen, building a new utility room, adding 2 bedrooms and bathrooms, and reconfiguring the internal space. Work continues on the final external touches.

As for the internal finishes and flooring, Mark tells us more…

We have done many projects before both personally and professionally, and as we have some background in interior design we knew we wanted a bold and striking internal look for this house. The last house we had was ultra-modern with a gloss kitchen and polished marble floors throughout whereas for this house our overall style had a loosely based Victorian influence: timber panelling, hand painted shaker kitchen, four-panel doors, brass fixtures and fittings, Crittall style frames and printed papers were chosen with a certain look in mind, and the crucial piece for me was the flooring.

It had to be a floor that married and accentuated the overall look. The bold printed papers and murals and the deep rich paint tones all had to blend and create an eclectic overall mix that reflected our personality.

I was familiar with parquet flooring through my company and I’d seen other manufacturers in the trade but didn’t feel they offered the same quality as the Woodpecker product.

My local merchant Myers had samples as they are stockists for Woodpecker, and once I saw the quality of the flooring it was an easy decision. To keep with the traditional look we went for the Woodpecker Coffee Oak.

We have overlay underfloor wet-piped heating panels so I contacted Woodpecker to ask about the suitability of the parquet.

The customer service and advice was excellent.

We laid the underfloor panels and pipes and glued down a 10mm ply over the top, then glued the parquet directly to this.

The key in my opinion is the setting out and preparation. As we were running the hall and office in as one floor it had to be set out perfectly so the herringbones lined up in every direction. My joiners did a fantastic job. I’m something of a perfectionist and they toiled to get this spot on. The final result speaks for itself.

So far everyone who has visited and seen our house remarks on the “beautiful ” and “stunning” floor. Parquet of this quality is not cheap, but as with anything you get what you pay for.

This is the best quality parquet I believe on the market today. I have already had 2 customers ask for it in their houses having seen it in mine.

We have 5 dogs and so far we have had no issues with the floor marking or scratching. Obviously we have to take care when moving furniture etc, but this is a home not a show house and we couldn’t be happier with the flooring.
