Light Fixation is pleased to introduce a comprehensive course exploring Lighting Electrics. This is not an electrician's course - it's an interior designer's guide to the electrical infrastructure behind effective lighting.

Created and led by Ian Hawes, founder of Light Fixation, the course is designed specifically for designers who want greater confidence and control when developing lighting schemes. Ian regularly works closely with interior designers across the UK, Europe and the US, and his experiences have shaped both the content and structure of the course. 

This course is designed to provide the basic electrical knowledge that can help designers understand what goes on behind the scenes, and therefore inform and elevate design potential.

You'll gain a clear, practical understanding of:

  • Basic electrical theory - amps, volts, watts in a domestic electrical scenario.
  • Circuits and appliances - the importance of planning, safety features and testing requirements.
  • Light bulbs including type, size, shape, base caps, efficiency, colour temperature, quality and brightness.
  • Lamp holders, lamp shades, carriers and adapters, and how these choices affect installation and performance.
  • Drivers and transformers - what they are and why compatibility matters.
  • Dimmers - how they work, what they can do, protocols, compatibility, control and best results in both domestic and commercial settings.
  • International plugs, wiring, sockets and safety features - essential knowledge for designers working on overseas projects or with imported lighting.
  • Lighting for bathrooms and exterior spaces, including the importance of planning, understanding IP ratings, manufacturers guidelines and zoning.
  • Troubleshooting common lighting issues, so you can identify problems early and communicate effectively with contractors.
  • Glossary of common electrical terms and names used within electrical and lighting circuits.
