MUJI’s stunning new sustainable retail store in Copenhagen is now complete.

The 2100sqm store, the second largest MUJI in Europe, is located on the fourth floor of the world-renowned Illum department store. The store features a fabulous range of products, from fashion to MUJI’s signature stationery and homeware.

Copenhagen is well known for being one of the most environmentally friendly cities in the world, a topic that MUJI are also very passionate about. As a result, MUJI insisted that the majority of interior finishes were sustainably sourced or repurposed existing materials. These included the existing herringbone timber floor which was lovingly restored, the reclaimed timber structures which were originally part of the old national Children’s hospital in Copenhagen, and the hand trowelled plaster which is made of 100% recycled content.

As well as blazing a trail in sustainability, MUJI Copenhagen is also home to the first MUJI TeaHouse. Designed in collaboration with the Michelin starred Danish chef Claus Meyer the TeaHouse, which has a unique bespoke handwoven wicker bar front, benefits from stunning views across the cities famous rooftops.

The store was designed by MUJI Japan and delivered by MCa acting as executive architect and project manager. We were assisted by local partner SNA Arkitekter.
