THE BIID STUDENT DESIGN CHALLENGE RETURNS

Published on

Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) is pleased to announce the return of the BIID Student Design Challenge. Hosted by De Montfort University, Leicester, the one day charrette-style, CAD free-design competition will take place on Saturday 19th November.

Exclusively open to third year BA Interior Design and Interior Architecture degree students, the BIID invites course directors from across the UK to nominate and register teams of six students to take part in this industry led competition on behalf of their university.

The competition has been created to help students design collaboratively in small groups, an essential practical skill that is used in many design studios. Each team will be presented with a design brief on the day and will be given just six hours to develop a design proposal, before presenting their designs to a judging panel led by BIID President Susie Rumbold. Each group will be paired with an experienced, practicing interior designer and BIID member who will shadow the group, providing guidance and advice.

“We are delighted to bring back the BIID Student Design Challenge for its second year,” comments BIID President Susie Rumbold. “As well as providing the students with the opportunity to build practical design skills, the day is a fun and unique experience for students, allowing them to work with and gain feedback from a practising designer. We look forward to meeting some of the UK’s promising interior design students and seeing their grand designs."

This year’s event is taking place at the Vijay Patel Building, a new £65M flag-ship building at De Montfort University, Leicester. The building is the university’s hub for all Art and Design subjects and boasts spacious multidisciplinary studios and design collaboration areas as well as providing a dynamic and engaging environment for the students.

After last year’s success, the BIID anticipates a large signup rate and advises universities to register teams as soon as possible. To register your university and six students to take part in the competition, please click here

The deadline to apply is 12:00pm, Friday 11th November 2016.
