Sleep 2014: The Event for Hotel Design Professionals

Published on

Europe’s leading hotel design and development event returns to London’s Business Design Centre on 26 and 27 November with fresh highlights aimed to inspire and engage industry professionals. Encompassing a two day Conference featuring leading names in the business, an exhibition of design-led products from new and exclusive brands, installations introducing cutting-edge technology and the finest creative talent, the event is free to attend for all who pre-register online.

Opening the Conference this year is legendary restaurateur Jeremy King, who recently opened his first hotel, The Beaumont in London’s Mayfair, offering insight into how the art of successful restaurant management may be translated into the world of luxury hotel keeping. A panel discussion will follow about the new generation of designer hostels with speakers including the funder of Generator Hostels, Josh Wyatt of Patron Capital, and three of the designers setting the benchmark in this sector – Werner Aisslinger, Ian Burleigh and Anwar Mekhayech.

Patrick Jouin and Sanji Manku of renowned Parisian studio Jouin Manku will join conference moderator Guy Dittrich to reveal the philosophy behind their conceptual and experimental approach to design, a fusion of industrial production and craftsmanship to achieve beautifully realised hotel spaces from the Mandarin Oriental and Plaza Athénée in Paris to historic renovations in Tours and Strasbourg – both shortlisted for a European Hotel Design Award.

Other sessions new to the conference this year will hear from leading hotel operators and developers, including Billy Skelli-Cohen of Greenbrook BD, the developers of the new Mondrian London, and Carlson Rezidor’s Eugene Staal about how they identify the parameters for realising a well-designed project.

In a session titled “The future is coming…to a hotel near you” a panel of design and trend professionals consider where the new ideas and influences are coming from that will be translated into the cool hotels of tomorrow – how culture and style are defined and absorbed into hospitality environments.

Complementing the conference and exhibition will be installations that bring together forward-thinking design concepts and innovative products specifically for the hotel design community. Above & Beyond is a new outdoor feature curated by Scape Design Associates and furnished by KETTAL Outdoor Collections that will provide ideas and inspiration for creating unrivalled experiences for hotel guests including rooftop bars, restaurants, terraces, pool decks and gardens. Above & Beyond will also host an outdoor design surgery and serve refreshments.

The destination for socialising and networking throughout the event and a much anticipated highlight of Sleep each year, will be the Sleep Bar. This year Swedish design studio Stylt Trampoli has envisioned a fresh and vibrant concept, The Royale Agricultural Bar, which weaves flora and fauna into a nature-based design inspired by the past life of the venue, the Business Design Centre.

A gallery of winning hotel projects will bring the glamour and celebrity of the European Hotel Design Awards to Sleep - the chance for visitors to see who won Europe’s most prestigious hotel design awards at the previous evening’s award ceremony.

A late night opening, until 8pm on Wednesday 26th including a cocktail hour from 6-7pm, will give visitors the chance to take in the show and toast The Sleep Set winner announced at 7pm, followed by a presentation to the ReardonSmith Student Award winner.
