The BIID explains the benefits of being on the Council of Directors

The deadline for submitting your nomination to stand for election to the BIID Council of Directors is 12.00pm on Wednesday 12th June 2024. Any BIID Registered Interior Designer who is able to secure support from two other BIID Registered Interior Designers is eligible to put themselves forward for consideration. Being elected as a BIID director can be a hugely rewarding experience and can provide a wealth of benefits to the wider interiors profession as well as to your own design career.

1.Help shape the future of the BIID

The BIID Council of Directors is a democratically elected board that oversees the long-term strategy, financial security and ethical integrity of the BIID. They work closely with the BIID Membership, Sustainability, CPD, Diversity & Inclusion and Professional Practice Committees and are supported by the BIID staff team. Whilst working within the guidelines of our Articles of Association and Regulations, there is still huge scope to contribute to the activities, initiatives, events and campaigns that the BIID will focus on. The BIID Council oversees the development of each three-year Strategic Plan that lays out the roadmap for the work done to fulfil the BIID’s mission: to advance professionalism, integrity and excellence in interior design.

2. Challenge yourself

Becoming a BIID Council Director is undoubtedly a challenge – both in terms of the time commitment required and the work involved. Directors are required to attend 6-7 Council meetings per year (the majority of which are online but some are in person) in addition to key events such as the Annual General Meeting, the Inside Knowledge event and the BIID Interior Design Awards ceremony. In addition, most Directors also sit on one of the BIID Committees so will need to juggle their Council and Committee commitments. As well as time spent in meetings and events you will also be required to read through various briefing documents and proposals and consider different options. Whilst this commitment can be tricky to incorporate into an already busy lifestyle, our Directors in general thoroughly enjoy the challenge of the role, and the contrast with their day-to-day work as a designer.

3. Deepen your network

As a BIID Council Director you will meet lots of new people – your new colleagues on Council, members that may approach you at events to share their thoughts, and other industry professionals you will come across through your work at the BIID. Meeting these new acquaintances offers a unique opportunity to expand and deepen your professional network which can often result in new friendships, opportunities and sometimes new design projects.
