Lolita Colenso Design project
Penhaldarva House Truro
Lolita was asked to rework the interiors of a rural period cottage located down a single-track lane. The property included a glass conservatory that was uncomfortably hot in summer and cold in winter. The brief was to create one interconnected space filled with light, with room for cooking, eating, and entertaining – an easy, welcoming area for the whole family.
The original kitchen layout, arranged along the wall and around the AGA, was retained. The conservatory, however, was demolished to its foundations and rebuilt as a bright and airy dining space. The new floor level was aligned with the kitchen, new walls were constructed to reshape the area, and metal sliding doors were installed to improve flow and make the most of natural light.
The old AGA was updated, and the island was completely redesigned and enlarged, incorporating practical open shelving for large pots and pans. The worktop, flooring, sliding doors, and newly built larder cupboard became the core elements of the new look. A soft pink was introduced in the kitchen to complement the lighter flooring and bring a fresh, modern feel without losing the charm of a country kitchen-dining space.
Both the kitchen and dining room were fully refurbished, and the family and ensuite bathrooms were completely renovated. The result is a light, spacious, informal home enriched with beautiful textures and colours—a place designed for everyday living and easy entertaining.
