Tucked away in a picturesque Victorian walled garden, our customers’ stunning new contemporary home truly makes the most of its unique environment. The property stretches across the entire width of the garden, with the old brick wall providing an enchanting enclosure on three sides. With an abundance of windows and large openings, this home is designed to soak up the light and offer uninterrupted views of the surrounding greenery.

However, with all this natural light comes the challenge of managing solar gain and glare, especially during the sunniest parts of the day. That’s where Phantom Screens stepped in to provide a tailored solution.

Finding The Solution

Seamless Integration of Pergolas and Solar Power Screens

Our customers reached out to Phantom Screens to help them create a comfortable living environment that would allow them to enjoy the light without being overwhelmed by heat or glare. After a detailed consultation, we installed seven solar power screens and two custom-designed pergolas that transformed their outdoor space into a versatile, shaded retreat.

1. Bespoke Pergolas for Outdoor Living

The pergolas, each measuring approximately 6m x 4m, were installed to create a spacious 6m x 8m covered living area. Positioned perfectly between the house and the garden wall, the pergolas are cleverly hidden behind a galvanized mild steel façade that spans the full length of the house, touching both sides of the Victorian wall. This design gives the appearance that the pergolas are a natural extension of the home, despite being a later addition.

2. Thoughtful Design and Installation

We collaborated closely with our customers to ensure that the pergolas fit seamlessly into the existing structure. This involved careful coordination, including the temporary removal and replacement of the façade during installation. The result is a flawless integration that enhances the home’s aesthetic and functional value.

The pergolas are equipped with motorized retractable roof slats and LED lighting, creating a versatile outdoor space ideal for dining and entertaining. The slats can be controlled in separate zones, allowing the homeowners to adjust the amount of light and shade to their preference.

3. Complete Solar Management with Power Screens

To further control the home’s internal temperature and light levels, we installed power screens on every window and door. These screens allow the homeowners to manage solar gain effectively, reducing glare and heat while maintaining a comfortable indoor environment.

The combination of pergolas and power screens has significantly enhanced the living experience in this unique home. The pergolas, which account for about 15-20% of the building’s footprint, were retrofitted without any need for structural changes or extensive foundation work. They offer flexibility in how the outdoor space is used, providing a cozy, insect-free area for relaxation and social gatherings.

As evening falls, the LED lighting transforms the space, making it perfect for entertaining long after the sun has set. The addition of screens ensures that the homeowners can enjoy their outdoor space without worrying about the sun’s harsh rays or pesky insects.

Additional Pergola Specifications:

• Size: Two units, 5940mm wide. The unit nearest the house projects 4m, while the second projects 3.9m.

• Roof Zones: Each pergola roof is split into two equal zones, creating four independent zones for maximum shading flexibility.

• Slat Design: Slats are angled to allow maximum light or shade as needed, with drains fitted to all legs except those with power feeds.

• LED Lighting: Dimmable LED lights are fitted on all four long sides, controlled via remote.

• Screens: Four motorised screens with zip rollers using grey 10% open screen fabric (Serge Ferrari Soltis 86). All aluminium is finished in RAL 7016 matt.

• Controls: All motors and controls are Somfy IO for reliable, easy operation.
