In our latest collaboration, Interior Designer Rachel Chudley conjures up a ‘Modern Baroque’ London flat for her growing family.

It seems there is no task too bold or daunting for Rachel Chudley, one of the UK’s most recently nominated designers to land on House & Garden's Top 100 list in 2022, and who in the past year simultaneously began renovations on her home in East London. In her collaboration with Schumacher, she masters the art of using unexpected patterns to maneuver around the traditional confines of spaces Chudley believes we no longer operate within.

  • The surrealist sofa is upholstered in Schumacher’s Khotan Weave, its pattern inspired by antique Tibetan rugs. Pillow in Saz Paisley Velvet and stool in Sasha Diamond Ikat, both by Cabana for Schumacher; curtains in Cusco Ikat by Schumacher.

  • In the bathroom, walls covered in a duo of Schumacher velvets—green Empress Performance Velvet and Bezique Flamestitch Velvet—are an unexpected luxury. “The way the light offsets the chartreuse of the walls is sensational!” proclaims Chudley.

  • Jennie Velvet is used on the footboard and bed hangings, which are trimmed in Turret Tape; the headboard is in Metropolitan Velvet.

  • Rachel says, "I eschew all those rules of what certain spaces should and shouldn’t look like— our lives don’t operate within those traditional confines of spaces anymore. I wanted Otis’s room to feel both magical and imaginative for a small child growing up while steering away from typical baby colorways and themes."

  • Schumacher’s Finches Jungle wallpaper panels camouflage closet doors. The chair is in The Wave cut velvet by Miles Redd for Schumacher. The ceiling is a dreamy escape using Cloud Toile wallcovering.

  • When Rachel mentions the nursery for her son, "I love how the yellow of the curtains cuts through the darker hues of the medieval-inspired, animal-patterned fabrics on the walls, providing a fresh break, and the delicate touch of the embroidery will give Otis something to appreciate. The daybed is the perfect place to snuggle and read to him at bedtime while he’s still a baby, but it will also become his bed later on."
