Why you need a CSCS card

The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) provides proof that individuals working on construction sites have the required training and qualifications for the type of work they carry out.  It issues CSCS cards to qualified individuals demonstrating that they have achieved, or are working towards, a recognised construction related qualification. Interior designers are eligible to apply for CSCS cards.

I’ve never been asked for a CSCS card on site – why do I need one?

It’s true that there isn’t a legal requirement to hold a CSCS card. The contractor or client can choose whether construction workers have to hold a card before they’re allowed on site. However, most principal contractors and developers do require workers on their sites to hold a valid CSCS card.

What about the CSCS Construction Site Visitor (yellow) card?

If you’re using the CSCS construction site visitor (yellow) card to visit the site of your projects, be aware that the CSCS will stop issuing this card on 28 February 2020. That means any cards issued from 3 September 2018 will expire on 31 August 2020 and are not renewable.

Visitor card issued before 3 September 2018? It will remain valid until the expiry date, and isn’t renewable.

If you’re using a visitor card, it’s essential that you apply for a new CSCS card now. CSCS has announced, ‘Visitor card holders who do not take the necessary steps to replace their cards will find they will be unable to obtain another CSCS card.’

I have an interior design degree. Can I use that, or do I need to be a BIID Registered Interior Designer to get the card?

You need to be a member of a professional body recognised by CSCS to get a card. BIID Registered Interior Designer is recognised by CSCS. Find BIID via the professional body membership search tool.

CSCS also requires you to have up to date continuing professional development (CPD) records for the last two years. You’ll also need to have passed the CITB health, safety and environment (HS&E) test for managers and professionals (see ‘How do I apply for a CSCS card’, below) within the last two years.

As a BIID member which CSCS card do I apply for?

There are two CSCS cards BIID members are eligible to apply for.

If you are a BIID Registered Interior Designer you can apply for the professionally qualified persons (PQP) card.

If you are an Associate member you can apply for the Trainee card.

How do I apply for a CSCS card?

If you’re applying for the PQP card or the Trainee card you’ll need to take the CITB health, safety and environment (HS&E) test for managers and professionals first. There are 50 questions to answer in the 45 minutes allocated. The test has to be taken in an official test centre on the touch screen, and costs £21. It’s best to revise before you book, according to the CITB. Find the range of revision materials

There are many test centres nationwide and you’ll see a wide choice of dates and times available. On the day, arrive at least 15 minutes before the test is due to start. You’ll need to bring the confirmation email or letter you received when you booked. You’ll also need ID with your photo and signature, for example a valid passport or photo card driving licence.

I’ve passed the test. What now?

You’ll need to email cscs@citb.co.uk with a PDF of your BIID membership certificate in order to evidence your professional membership, as well as emailing a copy of the certificate that shows you passed the CITB health, safety and environment (HS&E) test for managers and professionals.

Next, call 0344 994 4777 and pay £36 using a credit or debit card. Your CSCS card will be posted out to you on the next working day.

How long are the cards valid for?

The CSCS PQP card is valid for 5 years and can be renewed. When you renew your card your BIID membership will be re-verified. You'll have also had have passed the CITB health, safety and environment (HS&E) test for managers and professionals within the last two years to renew.

Bear in mind that when you renew your card your BIID membership and your CPD records will be re-verified. You’ll also have to have passed the CITB health, safety and environment (HS&E) test for managers and professionals within the last two years to renew.

The CSCS Trainee card is valid for 5 years after which it cannot be renewed. It is designed as a temporary card with the expectation that after 5 years you will be eligible for the CSCS PQP card.
