Drennan & Sturrock project
Victorian Weekend retreat in East Lothian, full refurbishment and extension
When returning clients decided to refurbish their much-loved family retreat in an unbeatable location in East Lothian for golf and relaxation, I was brought in at an early stage and worked closely with the clients, architect and an on site team. We reconfigured the ground floor, combining a small kitchen and dining room with a sympathetic extension to create a generous heart to the house with flexible access to a new terrace. The extension included ancillary rooms and a seating area which flowed through new double doors to a games room with bar, bespoke pool table and seating area for fun, away from a second calmer sitting room. Four bathrooms and the fireplaces were replaced and we designed several pieces of bespoke cabinetry. Retaining original features where possible, we restored the Oregon pine staircase and replaced mismatched windows and hardware while the exterior stonework and roof were entirely refurbished. We updated the electrical and lighting layouts as required and relocated heating systems. The ground floor was levelled and finished with hard flooring and bespoke rugs. Reusing some of the clients existing furnishings, relocating or reupholstering them, we created a fresh decorative scheme, commissioning a local cabinetmaker to make new pieces in oak. New window treatments were provided throughout including some complex electrical blinds. Finally some of the clients artworks were re-hung and spaces left for more artworks to be sourced and enjoyed.
