Statement:

I am pleased to submit my candidacy for a position on the Council of Directors of the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) Council. With over 35 years of experience in the interior design profession, I bring a wealth of knowledge and a proven track record of success in both design and project management. My expertise spans residential, commercial, and hospitality design worldwide, offering a varied perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing our industry.

I am a designer known for innovation and transformative design. My journey in design covers a diverse range of disciplines, from commercial to luxurious residential interior commissions, bespoke yachts, futuristic resorts, theatre design, and furniture. I have achieved many 'firsts,' including creating giant immersive, interactive spaces and pioneering morphing walls, gaining a devoted global following. Each project reflects my unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of creativity and originality.

A significant leadership role as the student president for the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) while studying in New York marked the beginning of my pursuit to acknowledge and elevate the professionalism of interior design. This quest has remained central to my career. Additionally, serving as a council member of the Interior Design Association (IDA) in 2012 deepened my understanding of industry governance and advocacy in the UK.

I established my design company in New York, where I was fortunate to work with a notable international clientele, delivering high-profile projects often shrouded in secrecy and bound by NDAs. Now headquartered in London with a studio in Italy, my design work continues as I take on more challenges integrating new technologies. I am particularly passionate about leveraging design to address contemporary challenges and contribute positively to society.

Throughout my career, I have demonstrated strong leadership and strategic thinking, successfully leading multidisciplinary teams and managing complex projects from conception to completion. My approach is collaborative, ensuring that all stakeholders are engaged and informed, which is crucial for effective governance and decision-making.

My focus on innovation has been a hallmark of my career. I have always sought to integrate new technologies and materials into my designs, ensuring that each project is not only aesthetically stunning but also functionally superior, a synthesis of concept and function. This dedication to continuous improvement and exploration has earned me a reputation as an innovator in the industry.

In addition to my professional achievements, I have been actively involved in volunteer work within and outside the design community. I have mentored young designers, helping them navigate the early stages of their careers, and have been a guest lecturer at various design schools and events, sharing my knowledge and experiences to inspire the next generation of designers. I have also participated in community projects, using design to enhance public spaces and contribute to social initiatives.

If elected to the BIID Council, my priorities will include advocating for the integration of sustainable practices in design, promoting diversity and inclusion within the industry, and supporting the professional development of our members. A primary priority will be to further the acknowledgment of professionalism among interior designers. Recognizing and upholding high standards of professionalism is crucial for the growth and respect of our industry. This involves not only setting rigorous standards but also ensuring that all members have access to the resources and support they need to meet and exceed these standards.

Thank you for considering my application. I am enthusiastic about the possibility of serving the BIID and our industry in this capacity. I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to the continued success and evolution of our profession.
