Nestled within the historic railway arches of Borough Yards, Akara invites diners into a tranquil atmosphere where simplicity reigns supreme. The restaurant's design, inspired by the concept of 'nothingness,' aims to create a serene environment that enhances the culinary experience while paying homage to the architecture of its surroundings. With a vision to celebrate simplicity and materiality, the design for the 40-cover restaurant draws from the unique interior architecture of the site. The archways serve as striking focal points, with a glass-clad façade and charming alcoves that enhance the dining experience. By adopting a sustainable approach, the design team has focused on valorising existing features, such as the exposed brick walls, which provide a rich textural backdrop. Paired with a polished concrete floor, the brickwork contributes to a neutral and organic material palette, resulting in an understated and ethereal interior.
Functionally and aesthetically, the Makuti Stools contribute an elegant, contemporary minimalist edge to Akara. Their refined design details and simple expression resonate with the restaurant's pure and poetic concept, elevating the space with modern sophistication.
