Architectural Interior Acoustics & Reverberation Control

Case Study 7: Architectural Interior Acoustics & Reverberation Control

  • Project Title: Premium Sound Absorption System for Historic Church Atrium
  • Division: Mute Soundproofing®

The Challenge

A sprawling church atrium located in London’s Woodford Wells suffered from severe acoustic issues due to its high, vaulted ceilings and expansive hard surfaces. Excessive reverberation and echo made the vast architectural volume poorly suited for speech, religious ceremonies, and choral performances. The primary design challenge was introducing a high-capacity sound absorption system that could control these reflections without cluttering the light-filled ceiling line or obstructing the extensive overhead skylights.

The Solution

Mute Soundproofing® designed, engineered, and installed a bespoke arrangement of ceiling-mounted and suspended sound absorption panels. These high-performance acoustic rafts were precisely positioned across the overhead expanse to interrupt sound reflections. The geometric configuration of the panels was tailored to work alongside the existing architectural framework, flowing around the natural skylight openings and integrating with the hanging spherical lighting fixtures.

The Design Outcome

The project successfully reduced reverberation times, creating a clear and acoustically comfortable environment optimised for both spoken word and musical presentation. By selecting clean, minimalist panel profiles that matched the interior colour palette, the installation delivered commercial-grade sound control while enhancing the striking architectural volume of the atrium.
