Origins Design Ltd project

Cotswolds project

Interior Designer Chantel Elshout asked Origins Design to create bespoke upholstered furniture and joinery for a Dutch barn conversion project in the Cotswolds.

Our team created 3D technical drawings for modular seating, headboards and joinery based on Chantel’s inspiration images and sketches. Once Chantel had made the final adjustments to the designs, we set about crafting bespoke upholstered furniture and joinery for five rooms in the property.

Chantel wanted the main living area to be understated and quietly sumptuous. We designed and installed dark stained oak joinery flanking the fireplace with vertically slatted storage cupboards and open shelving. This was paired with a bespoke corner sofa made and upholstered by our team in Zoffany Mustak, designed with deep, generous seats to transition easily from movie nights to smart entertaining.

“Origins was very accommodating, creating accurate 3D drawings from my inspiration images and sketches, and willing to tweak the designs until we were happy to sign off on production. The quality of the fabrication is outstanding and will last for many years to come.” Chantel Elshout

In the annexe, flexibility was important as this was to be the main entertaining area. We created a bespoke modular sofa to Chantel’s design with a low profile, deep-set and contemporary form.

For the study, Chantel wanted to maximise the vertical scale of the barn. Our team made a full height wall of bespoke joinery with storage and display shelves.

The primary bedroom presented a unique challenge of scale for Chantel as the vaulted ceilings reach 4m at their highest. To ground the space, she wanted to use an Emperor bedframe she had purchased and add a custom headboard with a playful wave silhouette.

True bespoke work often requires creative problem-solving. Fitting an upholstered bed base and bespoke headboard to the separately purchased bed frame involved a bit of complex integration. However the final result is a beautifully upholstered bed in a muted blue that harmonises with the room’s tranquil palette.

I love the functionality of all the pieces, and the joy it brings – every day. The playroom sofa is so fun with the contrast cushions, the living room sofa makes for great movie nights or having friends round for drinks. The joinery pieces provide plenty of useful storage, but also space to display the owner’s most treasured pieces collected over the years.” Chantel Elshout

Chantel went on to win a BIID regional award for this project for the Midlands and East Anglia. See the details here.
