AI and Construction: Governance, Risk & Compliance Issues

AI can enhance design, procurement, site monitoring and project controls, but its use also raises specific legal and risk issues that BIID members need to understand and address, both within their practices and across their projects.

AI is already influencing the built environment, from concept design and specification through to procurement, project management, site monitoring, cost control and client communication. Used well, it can save time, improve analysis and support better decision-making. Used without appropriate governance, however, it can create serious risks around confidentiality, copyright, data protection, bias, safety, professional responsibility and contractual liability.

This practical session will explore the key governance, risk and compliance issues for interior designers and construction professionals, and provide guidance on how to adopt AI in a controlled, proportionate and commercially useful way.

• An understanding of of what AI is and where it is being used across design and construction.
• Insight into practical AI use cases across design, procurement, project controls and administration.
• An understanding of the key governance, legal and compliance risks associated with AI, including data protection, confidentiality, intellectual property, bias, cyber security, procurement and liability.
• Guidance on how to assess AI tools before using or recommending them on a project.
