BIID Tour of 18 Stafford Terrace and Leighton House Museum

BIID members plus a guest are invited on an exclusive tour of the magical venues 18 Stafford Terrace and Leighton House Museum in London’s Holland Park. Join us for a guided tour of both properties for a viewing of the sumptuous interiors with specialist guide Angela Bolger.
About 18 Stafford Terrace, The Sambourne Family Home
From 1875, 18 Stafford Terrace was the home of Punch cartoonist Edward Linley Sambourne, his wife Marion, their two children and their live-in servants. The house gives an insight into the personal lives of the Sambourne family, and also provides a rare example of what was known as an 'Aesthetic interior' or 'House Beautiful' style. The Aesthetic Movement of the late nineteenth century advocated the use of foreign or 'exotic' influences in the decoration of the home. This can be seen by the various Japanese, Middle-Eastern and Chinese objects throughout the Sambournes' home. After the deaths of Linley and Marion Sambourne, the house was preserved by their descendants and in 1980 was opened to the public by the Victorian Society.
About Leighton House Museum
Leighton House Museum is the former home of the Victorian artist Frederic, Lord Leighton (1830-1896). The only purpose-built studio-house open to the public in the United Kingdom, it is one of the most remarkable buildings of the nineteenth century, containing a fascinating collection of paintings and sculpture by Leighton and his contemporaries.
Built to Leighton’s precise requirements, the house was extended and embellished over the 30 years that he lived in it. From modest beginnings it grew into a ‘private palace of art’ featuring the extraordinary Arab Hall with its golden dome, intricate mosaics and walls lined with beautiful Islamic tiles. Upstairs, Leighton’s vast painting studio was one of the sights of London, filled with paintings in different stages of completion, the walls hung with examples of his work and lit by a great north window. Many of the most prominent figures of the Victorian age were entertained in this room; including Queen Victoria herself who called on Leighton in 1859.

10.30 to 11.00 : Walk to Leighton House Museum (10 minutes) with time to stop for coffee (20 minutes)

to 12.30: Tour of Leighton House Museum
12.30: End of tour
Entrance to 18 Stafford Terrace is via a small but steep staircase to the basement level.
Refreshments and transport between the two venues will not be provided. There is half an hour between the tours to walk from one venue to another with cafes in between to grab a coffee etc.
Both tours last approximately an hour and a half in each house.
Please note there is no disabled access or café at either Leighton House Museum or 18 Stafford Terrace and no photography is allowed.
Folding stools are available for those who would like to sit down during their tour.
Archive
For those that would like to continue on their studies after the tour, the Leighton House Museum archives are available to view for free by appointment.
The archive contains extensive material relating to Leighton, his family and the history of the museum. An extensive collection of images of Leighton House is accompanied by material relating to its early history as museum and development up until the present day.
