The Solid Wood Flooring Company project
Hornsey Town Hall
The Solid Wood Flooring Company supplied flooring for the redevelopment of Hornsey Town Hall, a landmark Grade II* listed Art Deco building in Crouch End, London. Designed by Make Architects for Far East Consortium and delivered by Ardmore Construction, the project combined the restoration of historic civic interiors with the creation of 144 new apartments, requiring two distinct flooring approaches within one cohesive scheme.
Within the refurbished civic building, the specification centred on TW E954 herringbone flooring in a 90 x 350mm format, with approximately 989m² installed. The herringbone pattern was selected to reinforce the architectural language of the original interiors and provide a sense of rhythm and formality appropriate to the listed setting. Durability was also important, as these spaces were designed to accommodate continued public use while retaining a refined appearance.
For the new residential element and marketing suite, the flooring specification shifted to TW E973 chevron flooring in a light grey AB grade finish. Around 150m² was installed in the marketing suite, with the product also specified across the apartment interiors. The chevron pattern introduced a cleaner, more contemporary aesthetic, while the lighter tone helped enhance natural light and complement the modern architectural palette of the new-build spaces.
This project demonstrates how wood flooring can help define different identities within a single development: restoring character and heritage within the original Town Hall while supporting a fresh, contemporary feel in the residential element. It is a strong example of how pattern, finish, and specification strategy can be used to balance historic context, modern living, and long-term performance.
