Kensington House

To accommodate a growing family, this house in Kensington underwent a comprehensive refurbishment, including new bathrooms, kitchen, services, and finishes. The original staircase created an inefficient layout with excessive circulation space on each floor. We designed a new stair that significantly improved the plan, creating more efficient circulation and enabling a full reconfiguration of the house at every level.

A new rear extension forms a generous kitchen, dining, and social space. As an end-of-terrace property, the house benefits from gardens on two sides. A large frameless window has been introduced into the flank wall, enhancing natural light and framing views of the garden.

The design carefully balances respect for the original mid-century architecture with the client’s requirements for thermal comfort, increased daylight and internal flexibility. Existing external materials and proportions informed the massing and detailing of the new extension, ensuring that the addition reads as a natural continuation of the terrace.
