Lofty Ambitions

Lofty Ambitions Clerkenwell Loft Refurbishment, EC1, London

A full turnkey transformation of a 1,200 ft² Clerkenwell loft, converted from a partial photography studio and darkroom into a light-filled, highly functional two-bedroom, two-bath home for a busy professional. We embraced the building’s industrial bones by removing a dropped ceiling and revealing the original raw ceiling—raising it by over one metre—to introduce dramatic volume and maximise natural daylight.

To control cost while improving flow, the layout was subtly reworked around the existing plumbing and M&E. Works included new timber floors, a complete rewire and lighting scheme, full kitchen and bathroom renovations, and bespoke joinery throughout: built-in bedroom storage, a flexible guest/work-from-home bedroom-office, and a discreet utility cupboard that keeps the open-plan spaces uncluttered.

The interior decor was art-led: the client’s travel-acquired abstracts defined the palette. We extracted the most legible, resonant hues—selected for accessibility for a partially colourblind client—and translated them into finishes, textiles and joinery to create a calm, cohesive backdrop that celebrates the artwork. The brief was realised as a sociable dining hub for large family gatherings, a sleek yet highly functional kitchen, generous concealed storage, and adaptable accommodation for visiting parents.
