Architecture For London project
London Retail Showroom
Architecture for London was appointed by Fisher and Paykel to design their London showroom and experience centre on Wigmore Street, Westminster W1.
This commercial showroom refurbishment showcases the brand’s kitchen and laundry appliances within a calm, materially rich interior that references New Zealand heritage.
A key requirement of the brief was accommodating events and demonstrations for large groups. The brand desired a contemporary interior design solution that also conveyed their New Zealand heritage and values.
The evocative words of local poet Karlo Mila led to ceilings being imagined as contemporary tapa, and to the use of curtains in natural flax from the Pacific Islands. These flax curtains address the practical requirement for concealed temporary storage throughout the space, while reinforcing the connection to New Zealand and the wider Pacific region.
The showroom entrance becomes a space for a traditional tea ceremony welcome, with carved solid timber joinery and a kauri log as a focal element. Wide plank boards and a solid log table and island unit continue the theme in the office, display and demonstration spaces, creating a tactile and robust setting for events and appliance demonstrations.
