Volunteering with the BIID

Published on

An overview of the different ways members can get involved

As a not-for-profit professional body, the BIID is governed by its democratically elected Council of Directors, who are supported by a network of committees, panels and working parties. All these groups are comprised of BIID members who generously give their time for free to work on initiatives that benefit both the Institute and the wider interior design profession. Volunteering is a great way to give back to your profession, gain new skills and network with other designers.

Committees

We have several standing committees who meet around 4 times each year. Any member (Registered Interior Designer, Associate, Provisional Associate, Student, Affiliate) who is interested in volunteering is welcome to attend a meeting if they are interested in joining.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Committee

The remit of the CPD Committee is:

  • to oversee the organisation of regular CPD events including lectures, seminars and tours
  • to oversee the BIID CPD Providers Directory, including reviewing entry criteria
  • to oversee the development of online learning
  • to review the Institute’s annual CPD requirement

Diversity & Inclusion Committee

The remit of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee is to:

  • oversee the development and implementation of the BIID D&I Strategy
  • oversee D&I research into the membership, staff and/or wider profession/students/public
  • review BIID partnerships with tradeshows, exhibitions, events, and suppliers to see if there is opportunity to see how D&I could be incorporated
  • research ways the BIID can contribute towards ensuring individuals have equal access to train as interior designers and equal opportunity to progress and succeed in their chosen profession
  • research and develop relationships with other organisations, charities and social enterprises working to improve D&I in interior design and or the wider built environment
  • research and develop other initiatives, campaigns, and events related to D&I

Professional Practice & Sustainability Committee

The remit of the Professional Practice Committee is:

  • to oversee the operation and development of the entry procedure to becoming a BIID Registered Interior Designer®
  • to review, and if necessary, update the BIID Code of Conduct and Complaints Procedure
  • to build better relationships with UK interior educators and interior design students, including organising events (e.g., the BIID Student Design Challenge, held in November each year)
  • to respond to government and industry consultations on behalf of the Institute, as and when they arise (and as appropriate)
  • to ensure the views of professional interior designers are adequately represented at this level
  • to oversee support, advice and information offered to members related to sustainable interior design practice

Membership Committee:

The remit of the Membership Committee is to:

  • review the entry criteria for all membership categories
  • review membership fees an annual basis
  • review the benefits offered to members to ensure they are relevant, appropriate, and valued
  • research new potential membership benefits
  • oversee membership networking events

Panels

Rather than requiring a regular time commitment, Panels are groups members sit on where they can volunteer to participate on an ad hoc basis, when they have availability.

Professional Standards Panel

The Professional Standards Panel is a group of experienced Registered Interior Designers that the BIID can call on to sit on a disciplinary panel as part of the hearing of a complaint against a member.

Mentoring Panel

The Mentoring Panel is a group of experienced Registered Interior Designers® that the BIID can call on to assist with mentoring students and less experienced interior designers.

CPD Assessment Panel

The CPD assessment panel is a group of experienced Registered Interior Designers® who are asked to assess CPDs created by suppliers and manufacturers, to ascertain whether they are eligible for BIID CPD accreditation.
