Designed for complete newcomers as well as art enthusiasts, the tour introduces the essentials of buying and selling at auction in a clear and approachable way.

The experience also includes visits to selected galleries, dealers, and specialist craftspeople around St James’s and Bond Street, offering insight into the expertise and craftsmanship behind the art world.

EVENT PROGRAMME
The day begins at 10.00am at Bonhams Knightsbridge (Montpellier Street, London SW7 1HH).
You’ll visit leading auction houses, galleries, and specialist art businesses across central London with an expert guide.
Guests will receive a simple take-home guide summarising key points from the day, along with useful links for further reading.

You’ll have the chance to:
- attend auction previews
- see exceptional objects up close

- watch live auctions where possible
No prior art knowledge is needed.
Please note:
- There will be a lunch break and regular comfort breaks during the day. Lunch is not included in the ticket price.
- Places are limited to 15 people.
- The group will travel between venues using London Transport. Travel costs are not included.
- The day includes a reasonable amount of walking.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Anthony Thompson: Director - Anthony Thompson Ltd
Anthony is an experienced auctioneer, art adviser, and tour guide with more than 48 years in the art world.
He spent fourteen years at Christie’s King Street, where he worked as Director, auctioneer, and Head of the Islamic and Indian Art Department between 1977 and 1990.
For over twenty years, Anthony has led specialist art tours for individuals and small groups, including for BIID. His tours explore London’s museums, galleries, exhibitions, auction houses, and historic landmarks in an engaging and accessible way.
Known for his clear and approachable style, Anthony helps bring artworks, objects, and architecture to life through stories, insight, and real-world experience.
He continues to research art history and neuroaesthetics and remains closely connected to the international art world through a long-established professional network.

Christie’s
Founded in 1766, Christie’s is one of the world’s most famous auction houses. Its King Street headquarters in St James’s has been at the centre of the international art market for over 250 years, hosting major sales of paintings, jewellery, design, and collectibles.
Sotheby’s
Founded in 1744, Sotheby’s is a global auction house based on New Bond Street. Its London galleries host exhibitions and major sales across fine art, jewellery, rare books, and contemporary works.
Bonhams
Founded in 1793, Bonhams is one of the world’s leading auctioneers. Its New Bond Street saleroom is known for specialist sales across fine art, antiques, motor cars, and luxury items, attracting collectors from around the world.

This event is open to everyone.
The day includes a fair amount of walking across St James’s and Bond Street, and some steps inside venues. A reasonable level of mobility is required.
Otherwise, just bring curiosity and comfortable shoes.
Places are limited. Early booking is recommended.
