The Economics of Biophilia: Illustrated with a Case Study of The Spine

Discover how biophilic design creates healthier, more productive and economically successful buildings.

The Spine is the Royal College of Physicians' headquarters in Liverpool, designed by Manchester-based architects AHR.

Stephen Edge will explore the principles of biophilic design and explain his role as Biophilic Design Consultant for The Spine. Which was to blend key Salutogenic and Biophilic Design principles, with the architects and their interior design teams concepts and strategies for the project.

Using The Spine as an in-depth case study, Steve will demonstrate how these principles can create healthier, more productive and economically successful buildings. The building was the first in the world to achieve WELL Platinum certification for both its core and shell and interior fit-out, while also attaining a BREEAM Outstanding rating for the Construction. With 109 out of a possible 110 WELL credits, it remains one of the highest-scoring WELL-certified buildings in the world. Since opening in 2021, The Spine has become internationally recognised as one of the healthiest buildings in the world.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Stephen's career in design spans more than 50 years, beginning in York, where he worked with architects and town planners on the conservation and pedestrianisation of the city's historic centre. After studying Interior Design at Kingston Polytechnic (now Kingston University), he co-founded the multidisciplinary design consultancy Deacon Edge, specialising in energy-efficient workplaces, retail and leisure interiors, and architecture.

A retired interior designer and academic, Stephen is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). Over the past 30 years, he has presented at international conferences, lectured internationally, and developed sustainable and biophilic Interior Design programmes at several UK universities. Today, he continues to share his expertise through consultancy, education and speaking engagements on biophilic and salutogenic design.
