Awards Sponsor Q&A: ABI Interiors 2025

Rhys Beal, Head of Research and Development at ABI Interiors, shares insights into the brand’s design direction, sustainability journey, and global vision

ABI Kitchen

ABI Interiors is a design-led Australian family business crafting high-quality coloured fixtures and fittings since 2016. With innovation, durability, and customer care at its core, ABI delivers thoughtfully designed products for any space.

What key sustainability milestones has ABI Interiors achieved over the past year, and what impact have they had?

2025 has been a landmark year in ABI’s sustainability journey. We achieved carbon neutrality by offsetting 100% of our CO₂e emissions and ensured select products are WRAS-certified to meet UK standards. At our Australian headquarters, rooftop solar generated 240,000 kWh of clean energy, further reducing our footprint.

Our social impact is equally important, with over £50,000 contributed through partnerships with organisations like Baby Give Back, Ronald McDonald House, Furnishing Futures, and i=change.

Looking ahead, we’re transitioning all applicable products to lead-free materials by 2026, piloting a take-back program in Australia, and, with our 25-year warranties and Infinity Technology, extending product life while minimising waste. Sustainability isn’t a target for us — it’s embedded in how we design, manufacture, and grow.

What inspired the design philosophy behind the new Nesso Collection?

The new Nesso Collection was born from a desire to offer a square product range that doesn’t compromise style for function. We recognised a gap in the market where existing square designs often lacked refinement, offered limited finishes, or didn’t provide the consistency needed across kitchens, bathrooms, and utility spaces.

In designing Nesso, we took inspiration from the sleek lines and refined proportions of the iPhone, translating that sense of balance and simplicity into tapware, showers, and accessories. With its slim profiles and gently curved corners, Nesso offers a softer, more versatile take on the square form. Its minimalist design suits styles ranging from Japandi to modern coastal and industrial.

Crafted from 304 stainless steel, the collection is highly durable and corrosion-resistant, ensuring it performs as beautifully as it looks. Available in five signature finishes, Nesso enables customers to achieve true design continuity across their projects. We’re excited to preview the new collection at Focus/25 this September at the Design Centre Chelsea Harbour.

How are you evolving your manufacturing processes to ensure greater innovation, quality, and responsibility?

We’ve strengthened our supply chain and brought more processes in-house to enhance both quality and sustainability. At our ISO 9001–certified Zhongshan facility in China, we’ve introduced a state-of-the-art Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) process — a low-impact alternative to chrome plating that uses no water and eliminates the toxic by-products of traditional electroplating. This technology also allows us to develop new finishes with exceptional durability, offering lasting resistance to tarnishing, corrosion, and wear without compromising aesthetic appeal.

We aim to bring 50% of our coating in-house by 2027, moving to 100% by 2030, and transitioning all applicable products to lead-free materials by 2026. Together, these initiatives ensure ABI remains at the forefront of responsible, innovative manufacturing while supporting circular economy principles, reducing waste, and extending product longevity.

What design or lifestyle trends do you see shaping the future of interiors, and how is ABI preparing to meet them?

We’re seeing a strong shift towards accessibility, sustainability, and adaptability. Our Infinity Technology, for example, allows tapware upgrades without replacing in-wall components — extending product life and reducing renovation waste by an estimated 500kg per installation.

Similarly, our Modi range of cabinetry pulls, door handles, and towel rails offers flexible fixing points for effortless installation and customisation. Designed for modern renovators, Modi combines adjustability with refined aesthetics, letting users retrofit or personalise their spaces without invasive alterations.

How do you balance global growth with maintaining ABI’s design-led ethos?

Being family-owned keeps us grounded. While growth is important, our reputation has always been built on thoughtful design, quality, and responsibility — not scale alone. From our R&D prototyping facility, where ideas begin, through to our quality and testing facility, where products undergo rigorous longevity assessments, we maintain a hands-on approach at every stage. Coupled with in-person supplier audits and meaningful community partnerships, this ensures our values guide us as we expand globally.

Our vision has evolved alongside the business: to become the world’s most loved creator of thoughtfully designed products. That purpose drives continuous innovation and underpins our commitment to sustainability — from water efficiency and product longevity to cleaner manufacturing and carbon reduction.

By enriching spaces, we enrich lives. This mission shapes not only our products but also the way we connect with people and communities, creating a lasting, ethical impact for generations to come.

What excites you most about sponsoring the BIID Interior Design Awards, and what advice would you give to emerging designers combining innovation, sustainability, and functionality?

Sponsoring the BIID Awards is an exciting opportunity to celebrate creativity, innovation, and the power of design to transform lives and spaces. It’s a privilege to support a platform that champions excellence and sets new standards for the industry.

For emerging designers, my advice is simple: lead with purpose. Think about the longevity of your work, the resources it uses, and the people it serves. Innovation isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating designs that are functional, sustainable, and inclusive. By embedding these values into your practice from the outset, you’ll create work that stands the test of time and makes a real impact — while having fun along the way.
