Be Inspired By Award Winning Commercial Projects
Over the years, a wide range of projects have received awards from the BIID. So long as the design practice is based in the UK, it doesn’t matter whether the project is big or small, rural or city centre, you’re eligible to enter. BIID members can also enter from anywhere in the world, just one of the many reasons it's great to be part of the UK's only professional institute for interior design.
Need some inspiration? Below is just a small selection of the many brilliant commercial projects we’ve celebrated over the years.
James Brookman Design – No.5
Interior Of The Year 2024

James Brookman Design were charged with redesigning Plan.com's offices on the Isle of Man. The brief specified that the final design should take into account user wellbeing and JBD delivered. The final design leans on biophilic principles, utilising a living wall that spans over all floors, as well as attention to natural light with large windows allowing views over Douglas Bay.
The result is a flexible space that meet social and business needs while also factoring in a healthy and happy environment for the workers who use it.
Rendall & Wright Ltd - Marquis Suffolk
Winner For Midlands & East Anglia In 2025

When Rendall & Wright took on the restoration of this hotel and restaurant, they entered during the second phase which would see the building of a relaxing spa area as well as function facilities. They had to carefully blend respect for the existing buildings with developing and growing the business potential of the site.
A major challenge for the team was redesigning air handling systems while blending with the aesthetic demands of the space. The finished result is a relaxing spa environment that received early acknowledgement as "one of the best new spas in Europe".
Daewha Kang Design – St Andrew Holborn
Winner Central London 2024

The Commercial category really allows for a diverse range of projects. In 2024, DaeWha Kang Design won for Central London, with their tasteful and clever renovation of a Grade I listed church. The brief was to future proof this place of worship while taking into account the 1000 year history of the site.
Their driving concept was "Intensity through calm". The lighting design allows the church to host events and functions, while the relocation of the Lady Chapel created a calm and accessible space for worship.
Zelah Studio – Verdant Brewing
Winner - South and South West 2022

The versatility of spaces is a common theme in commercial projects. This was particularly key for Verdant Brewery when they instructed Zelah Studio to relocate their business into what was a run down industrial unit. The space needed to function as offices, taproom/restaurant, and a community hub.
The judges praised the sculptural design and clever use of contrasting dark and light colours for dramatic effect. The result of the complex project, was beautifully designed, bustling hub for Verdant Brewery and their customers.
Studio 9 Design – Cwm Tawel Estate
Anna Whitehead Prize - South West & Wales 2024

Although often considered a home from home, holiday lets are also featured in the Commercial category, as revenue making properties. In 2024, Studio 9 Design took home the Anna Whitehead prize for sustainability. They drew on the local environment when designing these holiday rentals. This was reflected in unique joinery from local craftspeople using local supplies. The team also reused materials where possible.
The result left the client delighted with the balance of rustic charm and contemporary design.
