BIID Announces New President and Award Winners at 2024 AGM

Angela Bardino

The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) is delighted to welcome the new BIID President for the 2024-2025 term, Angela Bardino, who officially took over the role at the BIID Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 20th September, held at King's Place, London. The BIID also presented its two prestigious Institute awards, the CPD Award and the Merit Award, to recognise the achievements of individual BIID Members who have made a valuable contribution to the institute.

The BIID AGM provides members with the chance to learn about the Institute’s progress over the past twelve months and vote in new directors.

New BIID President

The AGM marked the official hand-over to new BIID President Angela Bardino, who takes over from May Fawzy. Angela Bardino leads Jacobs Interiors & Insights team for Europe. Her multi-discipline design experience has traversed sectors including workplace, hospitality, arts, and culture and transport; working for a range of both global and local clients. She has a strong focus on human experience, examining the dynamic between a client’s operational policy and spatial requirements.

She is passionate about empowering early career interior designers, helping others to forge their own path, and encouraging them to be curious. Angela is part of the Trail Blazer Group for the eagerly anticipated Interior Design apprenticeship.

Angela has an active presence in the workplace interiors community, regularly contributing to the commercial office debate in both press and in industry talks and roundtables. She is passionate about design solutions that both perform and delight aesthetically, blending methodical research and design thinking together, to deliver bespoke design solutions for clients. Angela believes in pushing the boundaries of design with sustainability and human experience at the fore.

CPD Award

Chloe Bullock with her award

Commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) helps to ensure that BIID members are keeping up to date with the latest developments in a rapidly changing industry. All BIID Members are required to undertake an annual CPD requirement of 20 hours.

The CPD Award honours the BIID member who gained the most structured hours in that year. At the 2024 AGM, the recipient of the award was BIID Registered Interior Designer Chloe Bullock who recorded 151 structured CPD hours in 2023-2024

Chloe Bullock is founder of Materialise Interiors, a Brighton-based interior design studio. She has been running Materialise Interiors for 17 years - designing cruelty free, healthy and environmentally friendly interiors for both commercial and residential clients. She is a founding member of Interior Design Declares. In 2024 she published her book: Sustainable Interior Design

Merit Award

Gilly Craft with her award

The Merit Award honours a BIID member who has particularly excelled in three key criteria: excellence in interior design practice; a contribution to the development of the Institute and a commitment to the wider field of design education. Chosen by the awards committee, the 2024 award was presented to BIID Registered Interior Designer Gilly Craft.

Gilly has she has been a BIID member for almost 20 years and started volunteering not long after she joined. She was a member then Chair of the CPD Committee for many years, before being elected to Council in 2016 and serving as President from 2018 and 2019. When she stepped down from Council in 2020 she immediately joined the working party that developed and launched the BIID Interior Design Awards – which is about to hold its third awards ceremony next month. The Awards is going from strength to strength and Gilly is a huge part of the reason why.

Going over and above in that way is typical of Gilly – she is a constant cheerleader for the BIID and has worked tirelessly to promote us. She is a huge champion of the importance of professionalism in interior design and was instrumental in developing and improving our Complaints Procedure and sitting on our Professional Standards Panel.

In addition to her work with the BIID, Gilly ran her own successful interior design practice for many years, working across the commercial and residential sectors, and won several awards for her pro-bono work in the healthcare space. She has also done a huge amount of voluntary work outside of the BIID including being a scout leader for many years.

Gilly has recently retired from interior design practice and we very much hope that she will consider this Merit Award a fitting end to an incredibly accomplished career.
