The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) has announced details of its series of Professional Practice CPD seminars to be held at RIBA HQ in London during late 2014 / early 2015.

Led by renowned design business consultant, Dr Rachel Smart, the Professional Practice series will cover a variety of significant topics to help interior designers develop their business skills and improve practice management.

Confirmed dates are as follows:

13 November 2014                 Understanding Strategy and Writing a Business Plan
11 December 2014
Project Management and Managing Contracts
15 January 2015                     Financial Management and Accounting for Designers
12 February 2015                    Writing a Marketing Plan to Win More Clients

“By attending the Professional Practice sessions, designers will be able to develop their professional skills to meet their own particular needs,” explains Dr Rachel Smart.  “My aim is to help improve each delegate’s understanding of how to manage their business successfully both in design and financial terms. These sessions will prove invaluable to all designers who attend.”

BIID members are able to attend all Professional Practice series courses available at a discounted rate of £125 each (non-members £165). The one day sessions can be attended either on their own or as a series.  There are 16 places on each of the Professional Practice workshops so early booking is advised to secure a spot, with the last series of courses proving exceptionally popular amongst BIID members. Attendance at each course accumulates 10 CPD points which will count towards the required 20 CPD points needed annually as a condition of BIID membership.

Since 2000, Dr Rachel Smart has been advising commission and product-based design businesses, teaching at MA level for a number of educational institutions and providing professional practice seminars to organisations including Crafts Council, Arts Council, Craft Northern Ireland, The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, Craft Central, Design Initiative North West and Design Nation. Rachel originally trained as an interior designer with a foundation course and 4 year sandwich BA, was director of an architectural practice and completed an MBA. She has also completed a PhD at Birkbeck, University of London researching successful design entrepreneurship.
