IFI Announces World Interiors Day Theme: "Interiors Intelligence"

Published on

The International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI) and our global community will celebrate World Interiors Day 2016 on Saturday, May 28, 2016.

World Interiors Day is an annual event spearheaded by IFI and designed to spotlight Interior Architecture/Design. The event actively engages professionals, national organizations, design enthusiasts and the general public to explore creativity, imagination, vision and passion in relation to the role of Interiors in society, culture and our future built environments.

With the rapid evolution and general public awareness of design, the Interior Architecture/Design discipline requires a stronger foundation, with a deeper understanding and development of how the built environment affects and shapes humanity. As the IFI Interiors Declaration states, “In the spaces that are important to us, we experience not only a sense of place, but a sense of who we are, and of what we can be. Thoughtfully designed spaces help us learn, reflect, imagine, discover and create.”

While the degree of challenges faced by countries and populations across the global community may differ, the aspirations are invariably the same. This year’s theme “Interiors Intelligence” taps into the comprehensive knowledge needed to continue to bridge gaps in the Interiors profession and to foster a greater appreciation for, and connection between, the built environment and its occupants. It will engender and promote well-being and facilitate human advancement.

The month of May plays host to events highlighting the merits of the Interiors profession and the impact on the quality of life and the built environment. Events are planned by individuals and hosted all over the world, linked by a common theme chosen each year by the IFI membership to reflect the values of not only IFI but the industry as a whole.

Past events range from smaller round table discussions to larger city-wide events varying in type, size, and location. Individuals may work together with local and/or national organizations to link small scale activities together to form a city-wide, province-wide, state-wide or country-wide event.

Types of activities can include:

Work with your Local Government to proclaim the last Saturday in May as World Interiors Day. At the same time, have your city adopt the IFI Interiors Declaration to honor this important day. With the issuance of these proclamations, it is also an opportunity to showcase the progressive approach to design and economic development that your city government takes through the concurrent adoption/proclamation of the IFI Interiors Declaration.

Open door programs allow Interior Architects/Designers to showcase interiors usually not open to the public. Walking tours can be created by combining several of these open door programs.

Open   your   practice   and   invite   the   public   into   a   professional   space   to   see   how   Interior Architects/Designers work and the environments in which they design.

Free student practice day provides students the opportunity to work in design studios for a day and learn the practice of interior design.

Exhibitions and art events in cooperation with local museums and institutions to curate and relate to this year’s theme or interior design in general.

Lectures,  talks,  discussions  by  interior  architects/designers  at  schools,  public  libraries  or  other institutions will focus on the importance of our living environment.

Kid’s activities for the next generation! Work with educators to engage children in a range of creative, practical or fun experiences that raise their awareness of people and the spaces that surround them.

IFI is interested to know how you are celebrating this important day around the world! Please send us your topics, events, posters, and especially pictures to secretary@ifiworld.org.
