Clockwork Removals on Sustainability in Seamless Project Delivery

Clockwork Removals on why logistics deserves a place in the sustainability conversation.

As BIID Event Sponsors and Platinum Partner, Clockwork Removals and Storage works to strengthen collaboration between designers and suppliers, for a smoother experience for clients from concept to completion. In this Q&A, Richard Lear, London Group Manager, explores how logistics, storage and white-glove installation services can support more sustainable project delivery.

Sustainability is a priority in interior design. How can logistics and storage partners play a meaningful role in reducing a project’s environmental impact?

Sustainability in interior design is often associated with responsible sourcing and material selection, but logistics and storage partners can have a significant impact on a project's environmental footprint as well. By consolidating deliveries, reducing unnecessary transport movements and managing inventory efficiently, they can help minimise waste and emissions.

At Clockwork Removals and Storage, we support sustainable delivery through our receiving, storage and condition-checking service. Every item is inspected on arrival allowing issues such as damage, defects or missing components to be resolved before installation, helping avoid unnecessary replacements and transport. By storing items until they are needed on site, we can consolidate deliveries, reduce vehicle movements and improve efficiency.

What should designers look for in a logistics and storage partner if they want to ensure their supply chain aligns with sustainable values?

Designers should look beyond the headline sustainability claims and consider how a partner operates overall. Alongside packaging, recycling and emissions reduction, it's important to understand energy use and efficiency measures.

Transparency matters too. Sustainability claims should be supported by accreditations and independent verification. At Clockwork Removals and Storage, we hold ISO 14001, providing a framework for managing and continually improving our environmental performance. The strongest partners view sustainability as an ongoing journey, not a box-ticking exercise.

Have you seen a shift in demand from designers for more sustainable logistics solutions. What does that look like in practice?

Absolutely. Sustainability has become a genuine factor in supplier selection and project planning. Designers are increasingly examining the environmental credentials of every project partner, including logistics providers.

They are asking more informed questions about transportation, storage, packaging, waste management and recognised sustainability accreditations.

The shift is being driven by wider conversations taking place across the design industry, with growing recognition that sustainability should be considered throughout the entire lifecycle of a project, not just through material choices. Increasingly, they want evidence of how sustainability is embedded into day-to-day operations and how performance is measured and improved.

How can closer collaboration between interior designers and logistics providers improve project outcomes overall?

Close collaboration improves project efficiency and the client experience. When logistics partners are involved early they can help remove many of the practical challenges between design and delivery.

At Clockwork Removals and Storage, we create detailed photographic inventories of stored items, providing designers greater visibility and control. We also support residential projects by managing the packing, removals, storage and return of a client's belongings. The closer the relationship between designer and logistics provider, the smoother the project delivery.

Why is it important for service providers to understand the specific needs of the interior design industry?

Service providers are not simply supporting a delivery process, they are helping to bring a carefully developed vision to life.

A logistics partner who understands the industry recognises the importance of accuracy, care and communication. Even small issues can affect project delivery. We understand that we are not simply delivering furniture, but supporting the designer's vision and the client's dream, and that shapes the way we work throughout the project.

Why do you think events like the annual BIID Inside Knowledge Conference are important for driving innovation and collaboration within the design industry?

Innovation isn't always about creating something new. Often it's about discovering better ways of working. Events like Inside Knowledge create the conversations and relationships that help move the industry forward.

It provides an opportunity to share ideas, challenge assumptions and identify efficiencies. For us, this conference is a valuable opportunity to introduce our services while learning about the challenges designers face and exploring better ways of working together.

How can a white-glove delivery and installation service support interior designers throughout a project?

A true white-glove service should provide far more than a final delivery and installation. The best providers become a trusted extension of the design team, taking ownership of the logistical details that sit between specification and completion.

The greatest benefit is peace of mind. Knowing every item has been carefully handled and installed as intended allows designers to focus on creative and client-facing aspects of a project. Ultimately, great logistics should be invisible and the finished result should be unforgettable.
